Figure skating is the kind of sport that involves graceful moves. The performers usually do a lot of spinning and challenging footwork on ice. Proper posture and balance plays an important role in order to avoid falls along every glide. Be sure that knees are properly bent, torso should be positioned upright and the head must always be up. Fundamental moves such as the forward and backward skating, stops, edges, crossovers and turns must be familiarized first before stepping into another level.
Here are some of the basics that you need to learn about figure skating.
First, you need to learn about the proper gliding movement using your feet. This is the very basic move that you need to be competent with. After mastering the two-foot glide, you can now do the one leg stance by using your legs alternately on a straight line. You must see to it that while gliding on one foot, swinging of the arms must be avoided and that the stomach muscles must be pulled in while your free hip is lifted.
Second, you must learn how to get about stroking. This is a power move which involves a short but quick glides at the start until getting used to it. The feet are usually placed together and in order to do the stroking, one foot is slipped behind and pushed with the side in a relaxed position while arms on the side and your palms are down.
Third, you have to know how to do the swizzle. It is a two-foot push. In this move, both of your knees are bended and the toes are pointed forward like the V shape while gliding. With several repetitions, the path will form an hourglass figure.
And lastly, you need to master the crossover moves. This maneuver involves the crossing of feet while gliding on a corner.
When these moves are already familiar, you can do some combinations or tricks. With perseverance and passion, figure skating can be your next big thing.
