Most of us are confused about the game of golf and how its point system works. However, golf is actually a pretty simple sport. It’s just that, for beginners, it can be outright confusing. To further acquaint you with it, I’ll start with the types of hole par recognized in this activity. A hole is classified by its par and it indicates how many times a player should hit the ball. For example, a skilled player should hit 4 times for par four to be even. Knowing this, there are three types of par a golf player must be aware of. These are par five, par four and par three. The key factor in classifying each par hole is the distances from the tee (which is the starting place were you hit the ball) to the green where your target hole is located. A typical par three hole would average about less than 250 yards or 225 meters in length. For the par four, it will be raging between 251 – 475 yards or 225- 434 meters. Meanwhile, a par five hole will be 475 yards or longer.

Having gotten over the technicalities, lets now focus on the second important consideration for the game; the gear. Here are the basic equipments you use when you play golf. The firs and most essential game tool is the golf club. It is composed of a shaft, a grip and a club head located on the bottom part of the club. Now, there are different golf clubs made for different purposes and situations. The maximum allowed club per player is fourteen per golf bag. Second are the golf balls. These are usually white in color but other shades are allowed. Golf balls are usually round balls with minute poxes or dimples. These spots decrease the aerodynamic drag of the ball once putted by decreasing air turbulence. Lastly, there is the tee. The tee is only used on the first shot per hole. Usually it is shape like the letter “T” and is made out of wood or plastic. Other gold accessories include golf shoes and gold bags. Many golfers wear golf shoes with metal or plastic spikes designed to increase traction. On the other hand, golf bags are secured to carry clubs. Playing golf needs discipline, like any other sports. As what sports enthusiasts would say “practice makes perfect”. Golf is a gentleman’s game and should be played like one.

Sports and games may appear synonymous. In fact, there are instances when people practically use these terms interchangeably. However, there seems to be a fine line between these two terms. Take a look at these: When asked about sports, most people actually think of baseball, soccer, football, basketball and other hard core sports. When asked about games on the other hand, what usually comes into mind include chess, monopoly, Chinese checkers, poker and other non-locomotive games.

A blog entry I have had the chance to spot asks whether golf is a sport or a game. While golf may not be as interactive as court games such as basketball and soccer are, golf is certainly a sport.

Like courtyard sports such basketball, golf also requires much energy, strength and endurance. Unless there is a caddy, golfers are in dire need for strength to be able to lug that bag around while golfing. Golfers also require much energy to be able to walk part or the entire course instead of hopping into a cart.

Playing golf increases the endurance and helps develop healthy bodies. Simply walking on the golf course lowers risks of injury and is considered a health-enhancing activity. Golf also effectively builds or preserves bone density. It improves bone strength and resistance to fractures.

Professional golfers share the following tips to minimize injuries while playing golf:

Warm up for 10-15 minutes before playing the course.

Consider taking lessons. When you use correct technique, you are defending yourself from injuries and of course, learning how to play the game better.

Make sure you take care of yourself before and after play. If you feel you are already overdoing it, take a break. Alternate golf with other activities that work different muscles.

A very important tip: Stretch at least three times a week. Make sure to target the areas that are more golf specific, like the back, shoulders, and arms.
